Beatrix Farrand: Aspirations That Transcend Time | Woodbury Public Library

Tuesday, March 21st @6:30 p.m.

Join Historian and author John Cilio as you step back in time and learn how the first woman landscape architect created a business in 1895 that would rival any of her male contemporaries.

Beatrix Farrand began her business in a home office and expanded to offices and design studios in three states. She would create the campus landscapes for some of the most prestigious universities in the U.S. Her garden designs beautified the homes and estates of clients across the country. We will highlight how she prepared for her quest to be a landscape gardener, built a lucrative business and designed gardens as a beautiful canvas. Twelve of her gardens survive across the country and we’ll highlight the three surviving Connecticut gardens that have been restored.

John Cilio has been bringing stories from history back to life for 15 years and at over 450 events. He is a skilled historian having published seven books ranging from women working in WWII and their impact on today's business world to the history of Cessna aircraft. Nickolai Sikorsky wrote the foreword to his book, Helicopter Evolution that the Smithsonian has recently listed as a formal reference document. He is a member of the Danbury, Connecticut WWII Lost Squadron Veterans organization and has earned an American Marketing Association Silver Effie award and an award presented by Barbara Bush for a video he produced supporting public schools and partnerships in education. He has spoken to large and small audiences in over 60 countries around the world. He lives in Sherman, Connecticut. His goal is to make historic events relevant and entertaining to the modern listener. John retired from a career in IBM international marketing.
